JPEG Glitch
An aesthetic of visible compression damage, from blocky squares to color-banding. Extreme resaving, corrupted files and glitch artists made the look recognizable online in the 2010s.

Spot it
- 01Eight-pixel blocky squares
- 02Ringing halos around edges
- 03Wrong color blotches
Why it happens
JPEG compression discards detail in 8-by-8 blocks of frequency data, and heavy loss or corruption makes those blocks, their colors and their edges visibly wrong.

Image edit prompt“Make this image look like a heavily corrupted JPEG: visible square compression blocks, mosquito-noise ringing around sharp edges, washed color banding, blurry chroma blotches and a few corrupted block rows with shifted wrong colors. Keep the image readable but clearly damaged. Keep the original subject and composition.”
