Voxel Graphics
A three-dimensional pixel, or volume cell, used to build terrain and objects from tiny blocks or height columns. NovaLogic’s Comanche (1992) used voxel terrain to render rolling, textured landscapes on ordinary PCs.

Spot it
- 01Chunky cubic cells
- 02Smooth heightmap hills
- 03Grainy blocky distance
Why it happens
Space is stored as a grid of colored volume cells or columns, and rays march through the grid to find the first filled cell, avoiding polygon meshes.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as voxel graphics: build everything from tiny visible cubes and columns of colored blocks, with rolling heightmap terrain, grainy blocky detail increasing in the distance, flat directional lighting, slightly muddy early-90s colors and a hazy sky. Keep the original subject and composition.”
