Mode 7
The Super Nintendo’s Mode 7 rotated and scaled a single flat background into a pseudo-3D plane stretching to the horizon. It powered the tracks of F-Zero and Super Mario Kart in the early 1990s.

Spot it
- 01Tilted receding ground plane
- 02Stretched pixelated textures
- 03Flat upright sprite objects
Why it happens
The hardware applies a different affine transform to each scanline of one background layer, so rows nearer the horizon are scaled down and appear to recede.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Mode 7 style scene: map the ground onto a flat tilted plane stretching to a distant horizon, with chunky pixelated textures that grow larger toward the viewer, flat 2D sprites standing upright and a gradient sky above, in 16-bit console colors. Keep the original subject and composition.”
