Selective Color
A photographic edit that leaves one color vivid while the rest turns black and white. It entered popular awareness through Schindler’s List (1993) and its red coat, and digital editors made it easy in the 1990s.

Spot it
- 01Single saturated accent color
- 02Monochrome surroundings
- 03Sharp color isolation
Why it happens
A color range or mask isolates one hue and everything else is desaturated, so the eye is pulled straight to the remaining color.

Image edit prompt“Apply selective color to this image: convert everything to rich high-contrast black and white except the most prominent red element, which stays vividly saturated, with clean precise edges around the colored area and deep monochrome shadows. If there is no red, keep the hue of one main object. Keep the original subject and composition.”
