Bleach Bypass
A lab process that skips or reduces the bleach step so silver stays in the film, adding a black-and-white image over the color. Saving Private Ryan (1998) used it for gritty, desaturated, high-contrast war footage.

Spot it
- 01Desaturated muted color
- 02Deep contrasty blacks
- 03Gritty silver-like grain
Why it happens
Retained metallic silver forms a monochrome image on top of the dye image, which raises contrast, darkens shadows, lowers saturation and coarsens grain.

Image edit prompt“Apply a bleach-bypass film grade to this image: desaturated, steely color, deep crushed blacks, bright contrasty highlights, strong gritty silver grain, a cool metallic cast and slightly reduced shadow detail, like a high-contrast war-film print. Keep the original subject and composition.”
