Posterization
Reducing an image to a few flat tone levels, creating bold bands of color instead of smooth gradients. It echoes screen-printed posters, and digital Posterize filters made it a 1990s image-editing staple.

Spot it
- 01Flat banded color zones
- 02Hard tonal contours
- 03Few distinct colors
Why it happens
Tonal values are quantized into a small number of steps, so every pixel snaps to the nearest level and smooth ramps become stacked flat areas.

Image edit prompt“Posterize this image into five flat tone levels: bold, high-contrast bands of color with hard-edged boundaries between regions, no gradients or smooth shading, a limited saturated palette of deep blue, red, orange and cream, and clean screen-print poster simplicity. Keep the original subject and composition.”
