Pixelation
A mosaic effect that replaces detail with large, visible square blocks of averaged color. Image editors such as Photoshop made it common in the 1990s, and television adopted it to obscure faces, license plates and sensitive content.

Spot it
- 01Large square blocks
- 02Averaged flat color cells
- 03Lost fine detail
Why it happens
The image is divided into a coarse grid, and every cell is replaced by the average color of the pixels inside it, discarding information below the cell size.

Image edit prompt“Apply heavy pixelation to this image: divide it into large square mosaic blocks of flat averaged color, blocky and sharp-edged with no smoothing, so shapes remain readable only as coarse color patches and fine detail is gone. Keep the original subject and composition.”
