Distance Fog
A rendering effect that fades distant objects into a uniform color. Nintendo 64 titles such as Turok (1997) and survival-horror games like Silent Hill (1999) used it to hide limited draw distance and add mood.

Spot it
- 01Fading hazy background
- 02Flat gray-white haze
- 03Silhouettes in the distance
Why it happens
Each pixel color is blended toward the fog color by an amount that grows with its distance from the camera, hiding far geometry before it pops in.

Image edit prompt“Apply thick distance fog to this image: foreground objects stay crisp while everything farther away blends progressively into a flat milky gray haze, with silhouettes dissolving into mist, muted desaturated colors, a visible hard boundary where far shapes vanish and an eerie low-poly 1990s game atmosphere. Keep the original subject and composition.”
