Deepfake
Synthetic media in which a neural network replaces one person's face with another's. The term emerged around 2017, and the technique raised serious concerns about consent, fraud and misinformation.

Spot it
- 01Visible blending seams
- 02Waxy overly smooth skin
- 03Mismatched lighting and grain
Why it happens
An autoencoder learns a compressed representation of faces and decodes it onto another person's features, leaving telltale artifacts at the boundary and in lighting and texture.

Image edit prompt“Give this image the visual artifacts of an early face-swap video, as a purely stylistic look: a faint blending seam along the jawline and hairline, slightly waxy over-smoothed skin texture, subtly mismatched grain and color temperature in the face area, and mild warping at the edges. Do not swap, replace or change anyone's face or identity. Keep the original subject and composition.”
