Box Blur
The simplest blur: each pixel becomes the plain average of a square neighbourhood. It is very fast and, repeated, approximates a Gaussian blur, though one pass leaves a blocky, flat look.

Spot it
- 01Flat uniform softening
- 02Faint square artifacts
- 03Evenly smeared detail
Why it happens
Every output pixel is the unweighted mean of all pixels within a square window around it, which can be computed quickly with running sums.

Image edit prompt“Apply a heavy box blur to this image: detail averaged evenly within square neighbourhoods, a flat uniform softness without the smooth falloff of a Gaussian, faint blocky or boxy artifacts around edges, muted contrast. Keep the original subject and composition.”
