Kuwahara Filter
An edge-preserving smoother published by Kuwahara and colleagues in 1976. It flattens regions into painterly patches with sharp borders, and is a basis for oil-painting effects.

Spot it
- 01Painterly flat patches
- 02Crisp color boundaries
- 03Brush-like blocky regions
Why it happens
For each pixel, four overlapping subwindows are examined, and the pixel takes the mean color of the subwindow with the lowest variance, so it never averages across edges.

Image edit prompt“Apply a strong Kuwahara filter to this image: flat painterly color patches with sharp boundaries, fine texture and noise removed, slightly angular brush-like regions, rich saturated color, an oil-painting look with no outlines. Keep the original subject and composition.”
