Median Filter
Each pixel is replaced by the middle value of its neighbours, which removes salt-and-pepper noise while keeping edges sharp. John Tukey promoted the median for smoothing in the 1970s.

Spot it
- 01Cleaned specks
- 02Sharp preserved edges
- 03Blobby painterly patches
Why it happens
For every pixel, the values in a small window are sorted and the middle one is chosen, so extreme outliers are discarded without blurring edges.

Image edit prompt“Apply a large median filter to this image: isolated specks removed, edges kept sharp, fine texture simplified into rounded blobby color patches with a smooth painterly flatness, slightly rounded corners on shapes. Keep the original subject and composition.”
