Classical Image Inpainting
Pre-neural methods fill missing areas by spreading nearby colors and structure inward. Bertalmio and colleagues proposed a PDE-based approach in 2000, used to remove scratches, text and small objects.

Spot it
- 01Smooth filled patch
- 02Extended edge lines
- 03Blurry patched texture
Why it happens
Pixel values and edge directions from the border of the hole are propagated inward, smoothing as they go, so lines continue across the missing region.

Image edit prompt“Apply classical inpainting to remove a small distracting object from this image: the area filled by smoothly propagating surrounding colors and extending nearby edges inward, a slightly blurry smooth patch lacking fine texture. Keep the original subject and composition otherwise unchanged.”
