Morphological Opening
Erosion followed by dilation removes small bright specks and thin protrusions while keeping the main shapes. This mathematical morphology operation grew out of work by Matheron and Serra in the 1960s.

Spot it
- 01Small bright specks erased
- 02Thin lines removed
- 03Rounded surviving shapes
Why it happens
The image is eroded with a small shape, which deletes details smaller than it, then dilated with the same shape to restore the larger structures to their original size.
