Bilateral Filter
An edge-preserving smoother introduced by Tomasi and Manduchi in 1998 that blurs similar colors but not across sharp boundaries. It gives skin-smoothing and cartoon-like flattening without halos.

Spot it
- 01Smooth flat color areas
- 02Crisp preserved edges
- 03Waxy skin-like surfaces
Why it happens
Each pixel is averaged with neighbours weighted by both spatial closeness and color similarity, so pixels across a strong edge contribute almost nothing.

Image edit prompt“Apply a strong bilateral filter to this image: textures and noise smoothed into flat, clean color regions while the edges stay crisp and clear, a waxy, slightly cartoon-like surface finish, no blur halos around contours. Keep the original subject and composition.”
