Skeletonization
The reduction of a shape to a thin centerline that preserves its topology, rooted in Harry Blum's medial axis idea of 1967. It is used for character recognition, fingerprints, vessel trees and shape matching.

Spot it
- 01One-pixel centerlines
- 02Branching stick shapes
- 03Dark ground
Why it happens
Repeatedly peels away boundary pixels of a binary shape without breaking its connectivity, or keeps points equidistant from two boundaries, until a one-pixel-wide line remains.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a skeleton: threshold the subject into a shape, then reduce every part to a one-pixel-wide white centerline on a pure black background, with branches and junctions preserved, like a stick-figure version of the shape. No fill or outline. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
