GrabCut Mask
An interactive foreground extraction method published by Carsten Rother, Vladimir Kolmogorov and Andrew Blake in 2004. A rough rectangle around the subject is enough to cut it cleanly from its background.

Spot it
- 01Subject isolated cleanly
- 02Magenta or black background
- 03Slightly jagged cut edge
Why it happens
Models foreground and background colors with Gaussian mixtures, then alternates between refitting them and finding the best cut of a pixel graph that separates the two.

Image edit prompt“Show a GrabCut result for this image: keep the main subject at full color and detail, and replace the entire background with a flat solid magenta. The cutout edge follows the subject tightly with slightly hard edges and a few small leftover fringe pixels. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
