Watershed Regions
A segmentation approach from mathematical morphology, developed by Serge Beucher and Christian Lantuéjoul in the late 1970s. It splits touching objects, such as cells or coins, along the ridges between them.

Spot it
- 01Colored basin regions
- 02Thin dark ridge lines
- 03Touching objects separated
Why it happens
Treats gradient magnitude as a terrain, floods it upward from marker points, and builds dividing lines wherever floods from different markers meet.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as a watershed segmentation: fill each flooded basin with a distinct translucent color over the faded photo, and draw thin dark ridge lines exactly where neighboring regions meet, separating touching objects cleanly. Each object gets one marker region. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
