Rolling-Ball Background
Stanley Sternberg described this in 1983 for biomedical images. A virtual ball rolled under the intensity surface estimates the uneven background, which is subtracted to flatten illumination.

Spot it
- 01Flat even background
- 02Isolated bright features
- 03Dark subtracted gradients
Why it happens
Treating brightness as a height map, a ball of chosen radius is rolled beneath it; its path gives the background, and subtracting it leaves only features smaller than the ball.

Image edit prompt“Apply rolling-ball background subtraction to this image: the uneven gradual lighting removed, leaving a dark, flat, even background with only small bright features and fine details standing out, high local contrast, microscope-style clarity. Keep the original subject and composition.”
