Multi-Scale Retinex
Based on Edwin Land's retinex theory of color vision, this enhancement divides out slow illumination at several scales. It reveals shadow detail and evens lighting, often leaving a slightly gray, flat look.

Spot it
- 01Lifted shadow detail
- 02Even flat lighting
- 03Slightly washed local contrast
Why it happens
At several blur scales, the logarithm of the blurred image is subtracted from the logarithm of the original, removing smooth lighting and keeping reflectance detail; results are averaged.
