Laplacian Edges
An edge detector based on the second derivative of brightness, which responds to rapid intensity change in every direction at once. It highlights fine detail and thin lines, but also amplifies noise strongly.

Spot it
- 01Double-line edge outlines
- 02Gray neutral background
- 03Heavy speckle noise
Why it happens
Convolves the image with a kernel that subtracts the surrounding average from each pixel, measuring the second derivative, so edges appear as paired positive and negative ridges.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Laplacian edge map: mid-gray background with thin double-line edges, bright on one side and dark on the other, tracing every contour in all directions. Add visible fine noise in textured areas, like film grain. Grayscale only. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
