Prewitt Edges
An early gradient edge detector introduced by Judith Prewitt in 1970. It uses simple uniform-weight kernels to find horizontal and vertical brightness changes, giving a slightly noisier but very fast alternative to Sobel.

Spot it
- 01Rough gray edge outlines
- 02Grainy noise in texture
- 03Black flat regions
Why it happens
Convolves the image with 3x3 kernels that difference opposite columns or rows while averaging the neighbors with equal weights, then combines the two responses into edge strength.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Prewitt edge map: black background with slightly rough white and light-gray outlines, a little noisier and flatter than a Sobel result. Textures show as fine grainy speckle, strong boundaries as clear lines about two pixels wide. Grayscale only, old computer-vision look. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
