Sobel Magnitude
The combined strength of the horizontal and vertical Sobel gradients, giving an orientation-free edge-strength map. It is a quick, noise-tolerant way to see where an image changes fastest, and often feeds thresholding or segmentation.
Spot it
- 01Soft glowing white edges
- 02Dark smooth interiors
- 03Thicker lines than Canny
Why it happens
Computes the horizontal and vertical Sobel gradients at every pixel, then takes the square root of their squares to get edge strength regardless of direction.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Sobel gradient magnitude map: black background where the image is smooth, with bright white and light-gray edges that glow brighter where contrast is strongest. Lines should be slightly thick and soft, with faint texture noise in detailed areas. Grayscale only. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
