Roberts Cross
One of the first digital edge detectors, proposed by Lawrence Roberts in 1963. Its tiny 2x2 diagonal kernels are extremely fast but sensitive to noise, and it produces thin, slightly jagged outlines.

Why it happens
Applies two 2x2 kernels that difference diagonally adjacent pixels, then combines the two results into a single edge magnitude at each position.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Roberts Cross edge map: fine, slightly jagged white lines on a dark background, strongest on diagonal contours, with faint salt-and-pepper speckle across flat areas. Lines are one to two pixels thick and a little broken. Grayscale, 1960s computer-vision look. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
