Sobel X
The horizontal half of the Sobel–Feldman gradient operator, introduced around 1968. It measures brightness change from left to right, so it lights up vertical edges, and it is a core building block of edge detection and orientation analysis.
Spot it
- 01Vertical edges glow bright
- 02Mid-gray flat regions
- 03Horizontal edges vanish
Why it happens
Convolves the image with a 3x3 kernel that differences the left and right columns while smoothing vertically with 1-2-1 weights, approximating the horizontal derivative of brightness.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as a Sobel X gradient map: flat areas become neutral mid-gray, while vertical edges show as bright white on one side and dark black on the other, like an embossed relief lit from the left. Horizontal edges almost disappear. Grayscale only, slightly grainy. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
