Canny Edge Detection
A multi-stage edge detector published by John Canny in 1986 that produces thin, connected, single-pixel contours. It remains a standard first step for shape analysis, object outlines, and as a conditioning signal for image-guided generation.
Spot it
- 01Thin white contour lines
- 02Black empty background
- 03Broken edges at low contrast
Why it happens
Smooths the image, computes gradient strength and direction, thins edges to one pixel by non-maximum suppression, then keeps strong edges plus weak edges connected to them using two thresholds.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Canny edge map: crisp one-pixel-wide white contour lines on a pure black background, tracing object outlines, facial features and strong texture boundaries, with no gray fill, shading or color. Edges should be thin and continuous, fading out where contrast is weak. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
