Kirsch Compass Edges
An edge detector proposed by Russell Kirsch in 1971 that tests eight compass directions instead of two. It captures edges at any angle and also reports which direction each edge faces.

Spot it
- 01Bright direction-aware edges
- 02Thick well-filled outlines
- 03Optional rainbow direction hues
Why it happens
Convolves the image with eight rotated 3x3 kernels, one per compass direction, and keeps the strongest response at each pixel as edge strength and orientation.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a Kirsch compass edge map: black background with bright, slightly thick edges that respond evenly in all eight directions, and tint each edge by its compass direction using a smooth rainbow hue wheel. Flat regions stay black. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
