Image-Based Lighting
A rendering method that lights 3D objects using a real photographed environment. Paul Debevec pioneered it in the late 1990s, including in his short film Fiat Lux, and it became standard for blending CGI with live footage.

Spot it
- 01Environment reflections on surfaces
- 02Soft natural light wrap
- 03Matching real-world color
Why it happens
A panoramic high-dynamic-range photo of a location acts as a light source from every direction, so a synthetic object receives the same illumination and reflections as the real scene.

Image edit prompt“Relight this image as though the subject were lit by a photographed high-dynamic-range environment: sharp reflections of a bright sky and surroundings on glossy surfaces, soft color-matched fill light wrapping around forms, a clear warm sun direction and natural contact shadows. Keep the lighting physically believable. Keep the original subject and composition.”
