Hough Line Transform
A voting technique patented by Paul Hough in 1962 and reformulated by Richard Duda and Peter Hart in 1972 to find straight lines. It detects roads, building edges and page borders even when the lines are broken or noisy.

Spot it
- 01Long colored straight lines
- 02Dimmed underlying image
- 03Lines extend past objects
Why it happens
Each edge pixel votes for every line that could pass through it, parameterized by distance and angle; peaks in the vote accumulator correspond to the strongest straight lines.

Image edit prompt“Overlay a Hough line detection result on this image: darken and desaturate the photo, then draw the dominant straight lines as thin bright red and orange lines that extend across the whole frame, aligned with building edges, horizons and long boundaries. Add no other graphics. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
