Difference of Gaussians
A band-pass filter made by subtracting two blurred copies of an image. It approximates the Laplacian of Gaussian, mimics center-surround vision cells, and is widely used for blob detection and stylized line-art effects.

Spot it
- 01Bright and dark halos
- 02Gray neutral midtones
- 03Pen-sketch line quality
Why it happens
Blurs the image with two Gaussians of different widths and subtracts the wider blur from the narrower one, keeping only detail between those two scales.

Image edit prompt“Apply a Difference of Gaussians filter to this image: neutral gray midtones with edges outlined by thin bright-and-dark halos, like a high-pass sketch. Fine detail is preserved at a medium scale, and large smooth areas flatten to gray. Optionally threshold to crisp black ink lines on white. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
