HOG Gradients
Histograms of Oriented Gradients, introduced by Navneet Dalal and Bill Triggs in 2005 for pedestrian detection. It summarizes local edge directions into a grid of tiny glyphs that capture shape while ignoring color and lighting.

Spot it
- 01Grid of tiny line glyphs
- 02Star-like orientation bursts
- 03Black ground, white strokes
Why it happens
Divides the image into small cells, builds a histogram of gradient orientations weighted by strength in each, and normalizes histograms across overlapping blocks.

Image edit prompt“Visualize HOG gradient descriptors for this image: a regular grid of small cells on a black background, each containing a tiny white star of short lines whose lengths show gradient strength at each orientation. Lines align with local edges, forming the subject's shape out of glyphs. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
