Generative Outpainting
The extension of an image beyond its borders with newly generated content that continues the scene. It lets a tight crop become a wide establishing shot and spread in the 2020s.
Spot it
- 01Extended scene borders
- 02Seamless continued horizon
- 03Matched lighting at seams
Why it happens
A generative model treats the area outside the frame as masked and predicts content that continues the lines, textures, perspective and lighting of the original pixels.

Image edit prompt“Apply generative outpainting to this image: extend the canvas outward on all sides into a wider shot, continuing the scene with newly generated surroundings, matching the original perspective, horizon line, lighting, color grade and grain so the original image blends seamlessly into the larger frame. Keep the original subject and composition at the center.”
