Generative Inpainting
The use of generative models to fill or replace selected regions of an image so they blend with their surroundings. It builds on classic content-aware fill and became widespread in the 2020s for removal and editing.

Spot it
- 01Seamless filled regions
- 02Matched light and grain
- 03Invisible edit boundaries
Why it happens
A model predicts plausible pixels for a masked region from the surrounding context, matching perspective, texture and lighting rather than just copying nearby pixels.

Image edit prompt“Apply generative inpainting to this image: remove the smallest distracting objects and the clutter in the background, and fill those areas with newly generated content that matches the surrounding lighting, perspective, color, grain and texture so no edit is visible. Keep the original subject and composition.”
