Chan–Vese Level Set
A region-based segmentation model from Tony Chan and Luminita Vese in 2001. It evolves a curve to split an image into two regions of different average brightness, even where edges are weak or blurry.

Spot it
- 01Two-tone region split
- 02Smooth zero-contour line
- 03Works on blurry edges
Why it happens
Evolves a level-set function to minimize the squared difference between pixel values and the mean inside and outside the curve, with a penalty on curve length.

Image edit prompt“Show a Chan–Vese segmentation of this image: split it into two flat regions, the subject in one uniform light tone and the background in one uniform dark tone, with a smooth glowing red contour line along the boundary between them, forgiving of blur and weak edges. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
