Blob Detection
The detection of roundish regions that differ in brightness from their surroundings, formalized in scale-space theory by Tony Lindeberg in the 1990s. It is used to count cells, stars, spots and other compact features.

Spot it
- 01Circles sized to blobs
- 02Overlapping scale rings
- 03Dark dimmed background
Why it happens
Searches the scale-normalized Laplacian of Gaussian for local extrema across position and scale, giving each blob a center and a radius proportional to its size.

Image edit prompt“Show blob detection on this image: darken the photo and draw thin bright yellow circles around every compact bright or dark blob, with each circle's radius matching the blob's size, small circles on tiny spots and large ones on big masses. Rings may overlap. No other annotation. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
