MSER Regions
Maximally stable extremal regions, introduced by Jiri Matas and colleagues in 2002, are blobs whose outlines barely change across many brightness thresholds. They are robust to viewpoint change and widely used for text and wide-baseline matching.

- 02Letter-like filled blobs

Why it happens
Sweeps a brightness threshold from black to white and keeps connected regions whose area stays nearly constant across a wide range of thresholds.

Image edit prompt“Show MSER regions on this image: fade the original photo and overlay the stable connected regions as semi-transparent filled blobs in many distinct colors, with thin ellipse outlines around the biggest ones. Blobs nest inside one another and highlight letters, eyes, windows and bright patches. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
