Autostereogram
A flat image of repeating patterns that reveals a hidden 3D shape when the viewer relaxes their eyes. The Magic Eye books made autostereograms a worldwide craze in the early 1990s.

Spot it
- 01Repeating busy patterns
- 02Horizontal pattern shifts
- 03Hidden floating shape
Why it happens
Pattern repeats are shifted horizontally by small amounts proportional to depth, so diverging the eyes fuses neighboring repeats and the brain reads the shifts as 3D.
