Raster Bars
Horizontal stripes of color that bounce and ripple across the screen, a signature of demoscene intros on the Commodore 64 and Amiga. Programmers changed the background color mid-frame, creating gradients far beyond the machines’ normal palettes.

Spot it
- 01Stacked horizontal color stripes
- 02Smooth gradient metallic bars
- 03Pure black ground
Why it happens
Timing code changes the background color register on each scanline as the beam draws it, so every screen row can display a different color.

Image edit prompt“Add classic demoscene raster bars to this image: wavy horizontal bands of smooth gradient color in copper, magenta and cyan with bright highlight centers, weaving in front of and behind the subject over a dark ground, rendered with crisp stair-stepped 8-bit edges. Keep the original subject and composition.”
