Paint-on-Glass Animation
An animation technique where oil paint is smeared and reworked on a glass sheet lit from below, photographing each stage. Artists such as Caroline Leaf and Alexander Petrov used it to create fluid, richly textured films.

Spot it
- 01Finger-smudged oil strokes
- 02Backlit glowing color
- 03Flowing painterly edges
Why it happens
Slow-drying oil paint on a lit glass plate can be pushed around with fingers and brushes between exposures, so each frame is a transformed painting seen with transmitted light.

Image edit prompt“Repaint this image as a frame of paint-on-glass animation: thick oil paint smudged by fingertips, with visible swirling strokes and ridges, luminous backlit color that glows through translucent layers, soft wiped edges and dark pigment-filled shadows, in a rich painterly palette. Keep the original subject and composition.”
