Glass tubes filled with neon gas that glow in saturated colors. Georges Claude demonstrated neon lighting in 1910, and by the 1920s it lit shop fronts and cinemas, changing night streets.

Why it happens
Electric current excites gas inside a sealed glass tube, which emits light at specific wavelengths, such as red-orange for neon, creating crisp colored lines with soft glow.
