Mezzotint
A printmaking method invented by Ludwig von Siegen in 1642, where a roughened plate is burnished to make light. The digital version recreates its velvety blacks and gritty, grainy gradients.

Spot it
- 01Velvety deep blacks
- 02Soft grainy gradients
- 03Emerging glowing highlights
Why it happens
The plate starts fully textured so it prints solid black; light areas are made by smoothing the texture, which a filter imitates with coarse noise thresholded by brightness.

Image edit prompt“Render this image as a mezzotint print: rich velvety black shadows, soft tones built from a coarse irregular grain, subjects glowing out of darkness, slightly warm ink on cream paper, no hard outlines, a gritty engraved texture. Keep the original subject and composition.”
