Floyd–Steinberg Dither
An error-diffusion algorithm published by Robert Floyd and Louis Steinberg in 1976. It approximates continuous tone with a few colors and became the default dithering method in countless image converters.

Spot it
- 01Organic grainy stipple
- 02Smooth gradient illusion
- 03Worm-like pixel clusters
Why it happens
Pixels are processed in scan order; each is rounded to the nearest palette color and its rounding error is spread to the four unvisited neighbours in fixed proportions.

Image edit prompt“Redraw this image as a black and white Floyd–Steinberg error-diffusion dither: fine irregular pixel grain, smooth-looking tonal gradients built purely from black and white dots, subtle diagonal worm patterns in flat areas, sharp pixel edges, no grey tones. Keep the original subject and composition.”
