Crosshatching
Shading with layers of parallel lines that cross at angles to build darker tones. A staple of engraving and pen-and-ink illustration, it is now simulated by algorithms to give photos a drawn look.

Spot it
- 01Layered diagonal lines
- 02Denser lines in shadows
- 03Pen-and-ink contours
Why it happens
Brightness is split into bands; darker bands add more sets of parallel strokes at different angles, so shadows accumulate crossing lines while highlights stay bare paper.

Image edit prompt“Redraw this image as a pen-and-ink crosshatching illustration on cream paper: fine parallel hatch lines in several directions, crossing and thickening in shadows, bare paper in highlights, confident ink contours, black ink only, engraving-like precision. Keep the original subject and composition.”
