Film Colorization
Adding color to black-and-white footage through digital tinting, popularized by 1980s companies that colorized classic films for television. The results were controversial, with soft, uniform hues sitting on top of the original grayscale.

Spot it
- 01Pastel uniform skin tones
- 02Soft color bleeding edges
- 03Flat, slightly muddy hues
Why it happens
Artists assign solid colors to regions of a grayscale frame and the software preserves the original luminance, so tints cover the tones without adding true color information.

Image edit prompt“Colorize this image in the style of 1980s film colorization: keep the original grayscale luminance but add soft, slightly pastel flat tints, such as rosy skin tones, muted blue sky, olive greens and brown woods, with gentle color bleeding at edges, a faint muddy cast and low saturation overall. Keep the original subject and composition.”
