Distance Transform
A map in which every shape pixel stores its distance to the nearest background pixel, studied by Azriel Rosenfeld and John Pfaltz in 1966. It is used for skeletons, shape analysis and splitting touching objects.

Spot it
- 01Glowing shape centers
- 02Fading toward edges
- 03Contour-line bands
Why it happens
Computes for each foreground pixel the shortest distance to the background, scanning the image in forward and backward passes or by exact Euclidean propagation.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a distance transform: threshold it into a shape, then shade each shape pixel by its distance to the nearest edge, bright white at the deepest interior fading smoothly to black at the boundary, with ridge lines along the center. Background pure black. Keep the original subject and composition recognizable.”
