Graduated Filter
A lens filter that is tinted at the top and clear below, used to darken or color skies. Landscape and film photographers in the 1970s used it to balance bright skies with darker ground.

Spot it
- 01Tinted gradient sky
- 02Smooth soft transition line
- 03Balanced bright horizon
Why it happens
The glass carries a neutral or colored gradient coating, so only part of the frame is dimmed or tinted, reducing the brightness difference between sky and ground.

Image edit prompt“Shoot this image with a graduated filter: the upper part of the frame gets a smooth orange-to-clear tint, sky darkened and richer, the lower part untouched, a soft horizontal transition near the horizon, balanced exposure and slight warm 1970s film grain. Keep the original subject and composition.”
