Emboss
A filter that turns an image into a raised relief, as if pressed into metal or paper. It became a familiar digital-editing effect in the 1990s and 2000s, widely used for textures, seals and quick stylization.

Spot it
- 01Raised relief edges
- 02Flat grey surface
- 03Directional highlight and shadow
Why it happens
The filter finds brightness changes across neighboring pixels and shifts them along a light direction, so edges read as ridges lit on one side and shaded on the other.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into an embossed relief: a flat mid-grey surface with every edge and shape raised as a sharp ridge, bright highlights on the upper-left sides and dark shadows on the lower-right, subtle metallic sheen and fine detail preserved as tiny bumps. Light from the upper left. Keep the original subject and composition.”
