Truchet Tiles
A pattern of square tiles each carrying a diagonal or arc, rotated to match local brightness. Sébastien Truchet studied the tiles in 1704, and they now give images a woven, maze-like texture.

Spot it
- 01Square tile grid
- 02Interlocking arcs and diagonals
- 03Maze-like flowing lines
Why it happens
The image is divided into squares, and each square gets one of a few rotated line or arc tiles chosen by brightness or randomness, so lines join across tile borders.
