Sepia Toning
A chemical treatment that turns the cool black of a silver print into warm brown and makes it more durable. Widely used from the late 19th century for portraits and landscapes, it became shorthand for old photographs.

Spot it

- 03Soft faded contrast
Why it happens
The metallic silver image is bleached and converted to silver sulfide, a brown compound that is more stable and shifts the entire tonal range toward warm brown.

Image edit prompt“Convert this image into a sepia-toned silver gelatin print: monochrome warm brown shadows, cream-yellow highlights, softly faded contrast, fine film grain, slightly yellowed paper edges and subtle age spots. Use only brown tones, no other colors. Keep the original subject and composition.”
