Photochrom
A Swiss lithographic process from the 1880s and 1890s that turned black-and-white negatives into lush color prints. Orell Füssli and Photoglob sold travel views and postcards of landscapes around the world.

Spot it
- 01Pastel saturated postcard color
- 02Slightly dreamy airbrushed skies
- 03Fine lithographic dot grain
Why it happens
A negative is printed onto light-sensitive coated lithographic stones, one for each tint, and the stones are inked in turn so the colors layer into a tinted picture rather than a true record.

Image edit prompt“Recolor this image as a 1890s Photochrom travel postcard: lithographic pastel color, saturated teal and rose skies, soft green foliage, warm ochre stone, a gentle dreamy haze, fine stone-grain texture, slightly offset color registration and a cream paper border. Keep the original subject and composition.”
